The Last of the Mohicans (1992)
Grade: 62/100

Director: Michael Mann
Stars: Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Wes Studi

What it's about. Set near the Great Lakes in 1757. Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis) is of European ancestry, but was raised as a Mohican. Conveniently for the sake of the film, he speaks excellent English, courtesy of a missionary school. He and a handful of fellow Mohicans get caught up in the Northern American frontier of the war between England and France, which also involves colonists and Indians on both sides.

English soldiers led by Col. Munro (Maurice Roeves) are betrayed by their scout, Magua (Wes Studi), and attacked by Indians. Munro and his two hottie daughters (brunette Madeleine Stowe, blonde Jodhi May) are spared due to the coincidental arrival of Hawkeye. Also saved is red-headed soldier Duncan (Steve Waddington), the courageous but unimaginative would-be fiance of Stowe.

Hawkeye and Stowe exchange meaningful looks, declare true love, and soon Hawkeye vows to ensure her safety. This proves to be no easy task, since the unpleasant Magua is intent on wiping out the entire Munro family as payback for Munro wiping out his, years ago. Meanwhile, Jodhi May develops a low-key romance (appropriate for beta dog status) with Uncas (Eric Schweig), the son of the Last of the Mohicans, Chingachgook (Russell Means).

How others will see it. The cinematography is admirable, as are the costumes and sets. Stowe and May are ravishing. Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the few actors with sufficient intensity to make a film better by his mere presence. There is no shortage of action to appeal to men, while the romance angle is perhaps played up too much, to draw women to the theater. The film is a trim two hours, which helps ensure the pacing.

In short, most viewers will enjoy the movie, although they will find certain plot resolutions entirely predictable. But there are a few surprises along the way, including the untimely deaths of key supporting players.

How I felt about it. True evaluation involves spoilers, so this is your chance to avert your eyes if such things still matter to you. There were a few things that annoyed me about this movie:

Hawkeye's two fellow Mohicans go along with every one of his plans, even though they are risking their lives solely for Day-Lewis to achieve lasting romantic bliss with Stowe. The three amigo Mohicans are fearless in battle and kill numerous enemy Injuns. Three times, they escape from battles despite being greatly outnumbered. Duncan makes an unlikely sacrifice. May prefers to jump rather than potentially surrender her virginity to Magua. Stowe and May never complain about their deprivations, and their dresses never even get dirty. Magua is, of course, the last to be killed, and he goes down mano-a-mano with the avenging father. Now, Day-Lewis and Stowe can be together for eternity. Will she finally make him get a haircut?
