How others will see it. Some Like It Hot is nearly universally acknowledged as hilarious. It was voted #1 on the American Film Institute's list of 100 Funniest Movies. It has one of the best known final lines of any film: "Nobody's Perfect." And it has Marilyn Monroe at her most adorably vulnerable.
So, who would dislike this acclaimed classic? Well, it is in black and white. And guys posing as girls to save their hides is a tried-and-true gag worn out by Monty Python filler and inferior teen comedies. Not everyone will be amused, as sacriligious as that may seem to the many devotees of this film, many of whom are Wilder fans who can't accept that all of his best movies were already made by 1958.
How I felt about it. The number one problem for me with Some Like It Hot is the characters. Our three leads aren't consistent, and the supporting cast plays caricatures.
Curtis and Lemmon need money, cover, and a trip out of town, so they pose as ladies in a band that by great coincidence needs the exact two instruments they play. So far, so good.
Then Lemmon starts salivating over the girls, while Curtis is the straight man who demands restraint. Lemmon particularly has the hots for Monroe. A few days later, the characters have little relationship to what they were before. Lemmon enjoys playing golddigger to aged lecher Joe E. Brown, while Curtis risks his position to impersonate Cary Grant to impress/seduce Monroe.
Then there's the incredible coincidence of the gangsters showing up at the exact same Florida hotel during the girl band's engagement. A big hit takes place at the hotel during its peak business, inconsistent with Little Napoleon's criticism that mob hits provide poor public relations. The mobsters are cookie-cutter stereotypes out of Warner Bros. cartoons. Only those were funnier. I like "Racketeer Rabbit" the best.
The oddest moment of all comes when Monroe learns that her millionaire boyfriend who admits to no attraction to females is actually a broke transvestite who's fed her a pack of lies. What does Marilyn do? She leaves the band during its performance to chase after Curtis, who for a reason unknown to her is running for his life from gangsters to get into a motorboat.
Some will say, "Who cares? It's just funny." Just like those re-runs of "Bosom Buddies"?
